The Essence of Photography

My eight year old cousin, Aren.

My favorite Media Scholars assignment by far was when we had to take what we learned in class about photography and take some pictures. A few years ago, I got into taking pictures just on my iPhone. For my birthday this year, my parents got me a camera. I got the camera during quarantine, so I wasn't able to use it as frequently as I wanted to at first. But as restrictions lifted in Maryland, I was able to go out and take pictures of my family and friends. In one of of my Media Scholars classes, we had a guest speaker attend our zoom and teach us a few tips about taking pictures. The best advice was definitely that if you don't look stupid taking a picture, you're not doing it right. I definitely must be doing something right then. A few things that the guest speaker taught us is the following: Follow the rule of thirds. Try to not have a white background. Make sure your subject is clear and that there is not stray light that pulls the viewer away from the subject. Another big rule was to make sure that you are eye level with your subject. I had a few pictures that I thought followed the rules well. The pictures on this post are what I submitted for the assignment.

Fun Fact: I took all of the pictures on this website!
